The most popular social media platforms were face book which allowed users to send out messages, post pictures and videos and interact with the public.

Twitter which was used to send short and targeted messages  to thousands of followers and to interact with others.

You tube which was used to post videos and flickr  to post campaign pictures.


2011 social media engagement

The most interesting aspect of the 2011 presidential elections in Cameroon was the way candidates tried to incorporate media into their campaign strategies, even though the internet rate in the country is estimated at a mare 5%.

The target audience were mainly Cameroonians abroad and the international community , and significantly the international media which served as an echo chambers for candidates and offered the kind widespread and free publicity which regular media outlets in Cameroon could not offer.For instance,an interview on BBC, RFI,Aljazeera and others.
